"Let vengeance overtake you"

Films: Gamera 3: Revenge of Irys (1999)

Alias: Iris, Ryuseicho

Type: Unknown, possibly Mystical

Location: Forest/Civilized Area

Height/Weight: 99 meters and 199 metric tons.

Affiliation: Evil...maybe Neutral?

Summary: The last of Gamera's foes in his Heisei days just so happens to be one of the most enigmatic and vile creatures he's ever seen. Perhaps not as bad as the Gyaos currently overrunning the world, but with a mind ravaged by revenge and ill-purpose, as well as being connected to someone who did not get enough therapy in the kaiju world.

History: No one really knows where Irys came from. Some say it's an ancient demon from the South destined to fight the guardian of the North, Gamera, and bring about the end times. Others say that the Atlanteans made him from Gyaos DNA as a means of killing Gamera if he ever outlives his purpose or becomes too strong. Either way, Irys was found as a baby by Ayana Hirasaka, a girl who hated Gamera with every fiber in her being after her parents were accidentally killed in the first Gyaos incident. She befriended the creature, and named it after her dead cat too. After gaining a spiritual bond with the creature similar to the former one between Gamera and Asagi, Irys turned homicidal due to Ayana’s hatred, killing the entire village Ayana was living in. After eating most of the people, it grew exponentially, becoming a massive kaiju with one goal in mind: merge with Ayana, and make its Gyaos ancestors proud by destroying Gamera.

Notable Kills: The way it eats...isn't pretty. We'll leave it at that.

Final Fate: Irys seems to have Gamera on the ropes every single time it goes against him. It even manages to absorb Ayana...only for Gamera for forcefully rip her out. An enraged Irys is then given the business end of Gamera's flaming plasma fist, obliterating the monster.

Powers/Abilities: Irys grows stronger with everything it eats, and will be even more powerful if it absorbs the one it is telepathically linked to through the magatama stone. Depending on who's DNA its absorbed, Irys can use some of that creature's power, such as when it almost formed fireballs in its tentacles after absorbing some of Gamera's DNA.

Weakness: Beings of equal or greater power.

Scariness Factor: 5-Irys is one of the most messed up kaiju we've ever had the misfortune of seeing, mostly on the psychological level. His design may be cool-looking, but it's also very imposing, even if its baby form is kind of cute. BUT DON'T BE FOOLED. It is kept unsettlingly vague as to whether Irys was just driven mad by Ayana's hatred or was this violently monstrous to begin with. So when this thing is eating people one by one and swatting jets out of the sky, you'd best start running.

Trivia: -Ironically, Irys was portrayed by Akira Ohashi, who was Gamera in the previous film.

-In a hilarious gag reel, where Gamer and Irys are shown talking to each other, Irys is portrayed as a female monster with an eastern European accent. This lends credence to the idea that Irys is female in origin.

Someone give this guy a hug...okay, maybe not.
And teleporting from the light comes the absolute enemy.

It's not often the third movie is the best of the bunch.

Dammit, I love this movie.
Hero to all children, everyone!

The beauty of a murderous and confused child.
